To turn your dream of studying in Japan into reality, you'll need to navigate a series of steps, from choosing the right institution to securing a visa. In this article, we'll outline a comprehensive guide to help you embark on your educational journey in Japan.

STEP 1: Choose your course and institution

Everything comes down to what you want to accomplish after finishing your school. Choose a specialisation that is compatible with the study you have already completed and your future career goals. Always consider your career chances after the course of study.

Taking forward the above point, make a list of the courses that suit you the most. Research each and individual course, and the institution offering it. Almost every course is listed on the college websites, and the course details are given there. That information makes it simple to comprehend what you should be studying each semester.

STEP 2: Study in a Japanese Language School

Japanese language schools are more than institutions of learning; they are gateways to a world of possibilities. Beyond the linguistic skills they impart, these schools facilitate cultural understanding, career advancement, and unforgettable experiences. They bridge the gap between you and the enchanting world of Japan, making it accessible to learners of all backgrounds. Japanese language schools offer a wide range of programs to cater to diverse learning needs:

(a) Comprehensive Language Courses

These courses cover all aspects of the Japanese language, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking. They are suitable for beginners and those seeking a well-rounded language education.

(b) Test Preparation

Many Japanese language schools offer preparation courses for standardised language exams like the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) or Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), essential for university admissions and career advancement.

The choice between the JLPT and EJU depends on your goals:

  • JLPT: If your primary objective is to demonstrate your Japanese language proficiency for personal or professional reasons, or if you're already admitted to a Japanese university and want to prove your language skills, then the JLPT is the appropriate test for you.

  • EJU: If you intend to pursue higher education in Japan, then the EJU is essential, as it not only assesses your language skills but also evaluates your academic aptitude in subjects relevant to your chosen field of study.

(c) Cultural Immersion

Language schools often organise cultural activities, such as tea ceremonies, calligraphy, and traditional festivals, providing students with hands-on experiences of Japanese culture.

(d) Flexible Schedules

To accommodate various lifestyles, language schools offer flexible class schedules, including evening and weekend courses, allowing learners to balance their studies with other commitments.

STEP 3: Apply to universities

It's time to get in touch with the universities you want to apply to, get their application packs, and send them early. A dozen universities to choose from can be favourable, but you must take into account the application fee, which ranges from 200,000 yen to 300,000 yen.

Don't just apply everywhere. Compare your choices, decide on your preferred programme and university, and then pick one or two backup possibilities. Be cautious when completing the application form, and be sure to include accurate information supported by documentation. The university will give you an acceptance letter once you get accepted to study there. This document is crucial for the next requirements.

STEP 4: Receive Certificate of Eligibility (CoE)

Your education provider will provide a Certificate of Eligibility (COE), a document that attests to your enrolment in a particular course. Once you've accepted your offer and made your deposit, the CoE will be issued to you.

COE is an official document issued by the Japanese Ministry of Justice through the Immigration Bureau. It serves as proof that you meet the eligibility criteria to study in Japan and allows you to apply for a student visa.

You must include a copy of this document in your visa application so that the Japanese Government has proof that you are registered in your declared course.

STEP 5: Apply for a Student Visa

A student visa (留学ビザ, Ryūgaku Visa) is a legal document issued by the Japanese government that allows foreign nationals to enter, reside, and study in Japan for a specified duration. It is a critical component of your educational journey and requires careful planning and adherence to specific requirements..

Your application must be submitted with:

  • Passport with sufficient validity.

  • Visa application form.

  • COE.

  • Passport-sized photographs.

  • Proof of financial support.

  • Certificate of admission from your educational institution.

  • Academic transcripts and diplomas.

  • Health certificate (if required).

  • Any other documents specified by the Japanese embassy or consulate.

  • Submit Visa Application: Submit your visa application along with the required

STEP 6: Travel to Japan

Once the application has been processed and an interview, if required, has been conducted, the immigration officer will decide upon your student visa application. If accepted, it is now time to start planning your travel to Japan. Your visa will have a start date, which is the date from which the permit comes into force. Keep in mind that you won’t be permitted to enter Japan before this date. Plan your travel accordingly.

The immigration officer will verify your permit and other documents at the port of entry before allowing you to enter Japan. This is the final step of the immigration formalities and you can now focus on commencing your journey as an international student in Japan.
